“What God has given us is all we need; we require nothing more. It is not a question of large supplies — it is a question of the presence of the Lord” (J. Hudson Taylor).
That quote hit me like a ton of bricks when I was listening to At Home in Mitford while driving the Jeep home from work earlier today. It runs antithetical to most of the thinking in today’s Christian mind. Today, it’s all about how God can make you prosper and grow. Not that there’s anything wrong with prosperity, but that’s not God’s main goal.
I think so much of my waking life is spent wanting more. I spend so much thought on all the things I need before I can truly be happy. But God has already given us all we need. The verse says that God’s “divine power has bestowed on us everything necessary for life and godliness through the rich knowledge of the one who called us by his own glory and excellence” (2 Peter 1:3, NET).
I think about George Müller who ran an orphanage in England and never once asked for a single donation yet God provided every need solely through means of prayer. Obviously, that’s not meant to be the prototype for how to run every orphanage or nonprofit, but it is an amazing testimony of unwavering faith.
The point is that if we have God’s presence, we have all of God’s provision we need. God is enough. God’s promises are enough to carry us through whatever shortfalls or scarcities we might face. We know that our God will supply every need of ours through Christ Jesus our Lord. On that promise, we can rest.
