A Beautiful Wedding

“We need a witness to our lives. There’s a billion people on the planet, what does any one life really mean? But in a marriage, you’re promising to care about everything. The good things, the bad things, the terrible things, the mundane things, all of it, all of the time, every day. You’re saying ‘Your life will not go unnoticed because I will notice it. Your life will not go unwitnessed because I will be your witness’” (from Shall We Dance).

I’ve been to lots of weddings over the years. Extravagant weddings and simple weddings, weddings with caviar and weddings with baked beans. Some lasted while some fizzled out.

Today, I was honored to be a part of one of the most God-honoring weddings I’ve attended in a very long time. It was obvious to me that the bride and groom loved each other but also that they each loved Jesus more.

We had communion and worship at this wedding, which made it not all about the bride or the groom. It was all about God. That’s what weddings are supposed to be about.

Oh, and there were plenty of Star Wars references thrown in, which only served to enhance the awesomeness.

Planning the perfect wedding is all well and good, but planning a good marriage is better. Ask the bride and groom at the end of the wedding day what the ceremony was like and they’ll likely say it was all a blur. Ask a couple celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary what their marriage has been like, and they’ll have plenty of stories and advice to give.

I know which I want more. And I think I’ve seen two people who are committed to building a good, God-honoring marriage that’s built for the long haul.

My heart is definitely full tonight.
