Bounce into Bravery

“It’s not brave if you’re not scared” (from the movie Bounce).

I finally got around to watching another 90’s movie (technically, it’s from 2000, but I still count that as the 90’s) that I had somehow missed. I expected Bounce to be a light and fluffy rom-com, but 15 minutes in, I figured out it was decidedly not.

The movie centers around a man who gives up a seat on a flight to L.A. so he can hook up with a woman he met at the airport. As it turns out, that plane goes down and everyone on board dies.

For the rest of the movie, he’s trying to make amends with the widow. You’ll just have to watch the movie to find out the rest.

One line from the movie hit me in the feels: “It’s not brave if you’re not scared.”

That should probably be on a bumper sticker somewhere. Or possibly cross-stitched and put up on a refrigerator someplace.

There’s a notion that bravery means having no fear. I think it means having a lot of fear but going forward anyway. If you act only when there’s no fear, then you will lead a safe, predictable, boring life where you never grew because you never took any chances.

The movie wasn’t what I expected, but ended up being a good drama with bits of comedy thrown in. Even though it may not make any film critic’s top 100 list, I’d still recommend it for a good way to pass an evening.
