My 2015 Resolutions As of January 1, 2015

Note: these are still a work in progress, so they are subject to change. Most likely, I will think of something I left out and add it at a later date, hopefully before 2016.

Here are my resolutions for the new year (already in progress):

1) Lose 30 pounds. I figure that’s roughly 2.5 pounds per month. That’s doable, I think.

2) Read through the Bible again this year.

3) Wear my 30 X 30 jeans again (this won’t happen unless I accomplish goal #1)

4) Be working in a full-time permanent job by the end of the year.

5) Be better at giving other people the benefit of the doubt and giving grace both to others and to myself.

6) Do something spontaneous every day of 2015.

7) Do 5 things I’ve never done before (I’ll have to figure out what those are first).

8) Continue to be awesome.

9) Get back into jogging/running/fast walking/treadmilling/some other form of regular exercise.

I think that covers it for now. If I think of anything else, I’ll add it and note that I added it so I will remember that I added it. Comprende?

 

New Year’s Adam 2013

Ok, so you’re probably wondering what the heck I mean by New Year’s Adam. Think of it this way: Adam came before Eve, so New Year’s Adam comes before New Year’s Eve.

Now that we’ve got our terms defined, let us proceed.

I’m both glad and sorry to see 2013 go. But mostly glad.

It’s been a trying year with lack of stability in the employment and financial areas. I’ve had to reassess my view of relationships and realize that sometimes it is good and healthy to give up on certain relationships and move on rather than stay and risk further disappointment and hurt.

Yet I’ve known more intimately how God can sustain me and hold me up in the midst or turmoil and uncertainty. I’ve learned to count it all joy and find my miracle by living out of eucharisteo, or thanksgiving with joy and gladness.

Most of my loved ones are still here. Most of my friends have stuck around and remained as encouraging and positive as ever. Even some of the weight I lost has found it’s way back home. Boo.

I haven’t set any new year’s resolutions yet. I may not. Those generally tend to flame out in the first month anyway. I’m more inclined to let God lead and concentrate more on seeking Him in a more disciplined and consistent way than in 2013.

I still have three movies I haven’t seen from last year’s list of best picture nominees. I should probably get around to thar before the new list gets revealed.

I’m thinking 2014 will be a good year because it will be God’s year. I’m anticipating and expecting more than ever that He will show up in every area of my life and do great things.

More Things I’m Thankful For

If I took the time to focus on what I have instead of what I lack, I’d be so much better off. I really do have so much that I take for granted and what I think I need probably won’t even matter to me in five years– or five months.

So here’s another list of things I’m grateful for:

1) Beautiful Spring nights where the air has a hint of people grilling out.

2) Baseball games where the home team wins.

3) Good friends to share the night and the game with.

4) Another day to be alive.

5) That God is still in me and with me and for me.

6) Driving home with the windows down and good music playing loud.

7) That God’s future for me is so much bigger and wilder and more amazing than my little mind can yet imagine or conceive.

8) Friends who show grace instead of judgment and give second chances instead of shutting me out.

9) For those moments of serendipity when I run into friends old and new and remember how blessed I am to have them in my life.

10) For Sweet CeCe’s and more specifically their flavor, Southern Sweet Velvet (formerly known as Red Velvet).

11) For that amazing gluten-free chocolate chip cookie that I had last night at The Frothy Monkey.

12) That I’ve lost 31 pounds despite eating the above foods.

13) That I’m actually in better shape than I was when I was in high school.

14) That I care less what other people think of me and much more of what God thinks of me.

15) That my Abba Father is still very fond of me and still chooses to call me his Beloved.

16) For therapy sessions with my cat Lucy sleeping in my lap.

17) That there is absolutely nothing that will separate me from God’s love, nothing he hasn’t overcome by the cross, and nothing that he can turn into something beautiful and glorious.

 

9) For good coffee drinks and friends to share it with.

26 Pounds Later

As of my last doctor’s appointment, I’ve lost 26 pounds. Then I went on vacation and gained 20 back.

Actually, I think I’m still fairly close to my pre-vacation weight. Why am I telling you this?

Because all it took for me was giving up carbonated beverages and committing to a regular exercise regimen.

It will be 6 months tomorrow since I’ve had my last soda. Or as we in the south call all soft drinks, a coke. I do crave the taste from time to time, but I don’t miss them (and I feel way better).

I’ve been alternating jogging and bike riding lately at least 4 times a week. Regardless of whether my stomach is as flat as I want it to be, I feel better and I’m in better shape physically than I’ve been in for a long, long time.

It didn’t take a major overhaul of my lifestyle. All it took was changing one habit at a time.

I think that goes for the spiritual life as well. You don’t have to immediately adapt the monastic lifestyle where you’re up at 4 am to pray for 4 hours. You don’t have to start by memorizing the entire Gospel of John. You just have to start somewhere.

I do believe that discipline in one area bleeds into disciplines in other areas. What I mean is that if you’re disciplined when it comes to physical things, it’s much easier to develop spiritual disciplines. It’s all interconnected.

I don’t say these things to say “Look at me and how awesome I am,” but for you to see that if I can do it, so can you. So can anybody.
