Where You’re Headed

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “What lies behind you and what lies in front of you, pales in comparison to what lies inside of you.”

I doubt he meant it this way, but my take is that what lies within you is Christ, the hope of glory. What lies within you if you are a true born again child of God is God Himself. That is so much bigger than anything that lies behind you or ahead of you.

The truth is that you can’t ever go back and change the past. It’s done. There are no Deloreans or time machines that will take you back to 1955 (or any other time) to fix what you messed up. For better or worse, it’s over and done with and you live with the consequences.

While you may not be able to start over, you do have the power to change your ending. You have the ability to rewrite the outcome of your story. And really what matters most isn’t how you started out but how you finish.

I’ve mentioned more than once that God’s story is heading toward a victorious outcome. The victory is already secure and the outcome is guaranteed. In fact, God’s promises are so sure that you can speak about them in the present tense, as if they’d already come to pass.

Jeremiah 29 talks about God’s future plans for His children. He knows the plans He has for us. That’s where our focus should be. We want to make sure we remain in God’s will so that His good plans for us will be fulfilled in us. We need to remember that having all the success and fame and money in the world is worthless if God’s not in it, but if God is with us, we need nothing else.

Lord, keep our eyes on You and on the heavenly prize You’ve set before us. Keep our eyes on the finish line instead of the starting gate because we will only find You as we move forward instead of constantly looking back. Be with us and be everything we need and we know that Your future for us is good. Amen.

Once again, it’s New Year’s Adam, which precedes New Year’s Eve, which itself precedes 2016.

For better or worse, 2015 is coming to an end.

For some of you, it’s a year to remember and you wish it could go on a little longer.

For some, it’s a year to forget and it can end quickly enough.

For most of us, it’s been a mixed bag of blessings and hardships, of joys and sorrow, of good days and bad days.

My boss where I worked previously used to say that any day without a toe tag is a good day. I take it to mean that any day that you wake up is already a good one. Any day you get a chance to be alive is better than all those yet to come that you may or may not get.

As a believer, I do believe that death is only a gateway to greater joy than I can possibly imagine. To be absent from the body, wrote the Apostle Paul, is to be present with Jesus. I believe that.

I also believe that life here and now is too precious to be wasted on fretting about what might have been or what could be. As one of my new favorite movie quotes says, “There’s no present like the time.”

“And now we welcome the new year. Full of things that have never been” (Rainer Maria Rilke).

“Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering, ‘It will be happier'” (Alfred Lord Tennyson).

Best of all, with Jesus every moment and every breath is a second chance to start over and be the person you always wanted to be, the person God made you to be.

Maya Angelou, Twin Peaks, and Other Thursday Offerings

I found out with the rest of the world when Maya Angelou died yesterday. I was saddened. More than than, I regretted not taking the time to know more about her. I had read one of her autobiographies a few months ago, but I honestly couldn’t say that I still remember much from that.

Her last tweet was “Listen to yourself and in that quietude you might hear the voice of God.”

I like that. I don’t think that I listen to myself because I myself am divine, but more like I listen to myself because God dwells in me as much as He dwells out there. I’m reminded of something Ralph Waldo Emerson said: ” ‘What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”

You can’t find quietude and stillness unless you take the time to interrupt your busyness and make space for quiet. You have to turn off the TV, turn off the radio/streaming/music device, and put down your phone. You have to be still and tune out all the distractions that the media is throwing at you from every angle. Then maybe you can hear God.

I can tell you more about Twin Peaks, an early 90’s short-lived TV series that I’ve been watching lately. It is odd and compelling. It’s got David Duchovny in drag. I think that says it all. You probably need serious drugs to understand what all goes on during each episode. At least I think so.

There were only 29 episodes in the series and I have seen 23. I think there was a sort of prequel movie that followed. Only in Hollywood would that last sentence make sense.

But yes, it is Thursday, which makes tomorrow Friday. There will never ever be a time when that is not a good thing. I always love Fridays even when I’m not working. Because Friday always leads to sleeping in on Saturday and church on Sunday. Both of those are favorites of mine.

New Year’s Rockin’ Eve? Maybe

So far, my mailbox isn’t exactly stuffed with invitations to parties and soirees for the end of the year. My phone isn’t blowing up with texts or messages or calls– or anything for that matter.

To borrow off the old TV western, “Have Chips and GPS. Will Travel.”

Likely, this will be a subdued year’s end. I’m not one for crazy shenanigans anyway. I prefer a few friends to a crowd any day. And I’d much rather be inside on a cold night like this anyway.

I’m currently accepting offers for New Year’s Eve 2014. Apparently, that beats waiting until the last minute like this year.

Here’s something to think about as you ring in 2014: “Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year”

Now is the best day to be alive, to be thankful for being alive, and to live.

Don’t wait until 2014. Start now.
