Enter His Gates

“Enter his gates with thanksgiving;
    go into his courts with praise.
    Give thanks to him and praise his name” (Psalm 100:4, NLT).

I must have read this Psalm at least a hundred times before and never noticed that the first verse is not a suggestion but a command. Enter his gates with thanksgiving is God telling us not to wait until the Sunday service starts to begin worship.

The problem with so many of us is that we enter into the presence of God with anything but God on our minds. We’re thinking about what to have for lunch, what Monday’s workload will look like, how to get the kids ready quicker next Sunday, how not to stay up so late on a Saturday again, etc.

The key is having an attitude of worship the other 167 hours of the week and not just the one hour a week that we meet on Sundays. Worship needs to be more than just the four or five songs we sing in any given church service. It should encompass everything we are and everything we do. That’s worship.

If you break down the word, worship = worth + ship. We’re declaring the worth of God, or shipping His worth if you want to use more current vernacular. We’re letting people around us know that God is worth our sacrifice, our serving, and even our very selves. God is worth everything we are and everything we have , , , and then some.

I believe that if we wait until 9:00 am on a Sunday to decide to worship. we’ve missed worship. We’ve turned it into what someone aptly described as Christian karaoke. We’re singing words to songs about God — some songs we know well and don’t have to think about what we’re singing and others we don’t sing because we don’t know them well enough.

My prayer is that our worship is 24/7 and consists of more than singing songs and lifting hands. Lord, make our entire lives an offering of worship to You as living sacrifices that bless and glorify your name. Amen.

Psalm 23

The Eternal is my shepherd, He cares for me always.
He provides me rest in rich, green fields
    beside streams of refreshing water.
    He soothes my fears;
He makes me whole again,
    steering me off worn, hard paths
    to roads where truth and righteousness echo His name.

Even in the unending shadows of death’s darkness,
    I am not overcome by fear.
Because You are with me in those dark moments,
    near with Your protection and guidance,
    I am comforted.

You spread out a table before me,
    provisions in the midst of attack from my enemies;
You care for all my needs, anointing my head with soothing, fragrant oil,
    filling my cup again and again with Your grace.
Certainly Your faithful protection and loving provision will pursue me
    where I go, always, everywhere.
I will always be with the Eternal,
    in Your house forever” (Psalm 23, The Voice).

There’s a reason that Psalm 23 is the most recognized and beloved of all the Psalms in the Bible. Just think of how many times you’ve heard it recited– in church services and at funerals. These are some of the most familiar words in all of the Bible.

But have you ever taken a moment to really let this Psalm sink in? Have you ever seeped yourself in the deep well of these words?

How many of us are soul-weary and in need of restoration? How many of us are in the midst of walking through the deepest, darkest valley?

Thankfully, God’s story never ends in darkness. It never ends with heartache and tears. Joy will have the last word. Always.

This Psalm reminds us that God’s faithful love is never passive. It pursues each of us all through the days of our lives, through all the detours and dark alleys of our weakest moments.

God never rests or slumbers in offering rest to those of us who are overburdened and bone-weary.  All along the way, goodness and mercy are never far behind and God’s dwelling is always before us.

The promise of God’s faithfulness isn’t for a season or even for a lifetime. It’s forever.

Psalm 139:1-18: How He Loves

“O Eternal One, You have explored my heart and know exactly who I am;
You even know the small details like when I take a seat and when I stand up again.
Even when I am far away, You know what I’m thinking.
You observe my wanderings and my sleeping, my waking and my dreaming,
and You know everything I do in more detail than even I know.
You know what I’m going to say long before I say it.
It is true, Eternal One, that You know everything and everyone.
You have surrounded me on every side, behind me and before me,
and You have placed Your hand gently on my shoulder.
It is the most amazing feeling to know how deeply You know me, inside and out;
the realization of it is so great that I cannot comprehend it.

Can I go anywhere apart from Your Spirit?
Is there anywhere I can go to escape Your watchful presence?

If I go up into heaven, You are there.
If I make my bed in the realm of the dead, You are there.
If I ride on the wings of morning,
if I make my home in the most isolated part of the ocean,
Even then You will be there to guide me;
Your right hand will embrace me, for You are always there.
Even if I am afraid and think to myself, “There is no doubt that the darkness will swallow me,
the light around me will soon be turned to night,”
You can see in the dark, for it is not dark to Your eyes.
For You the night is just as bright as the day.
Darkness and light are the same to Your eyes.

For You shaped me, inside and out.
You knitted me together in my mother’s womb long before I took my first breath.
I will offer You my grateful heart, for I am Your unique creation, filled with wonder and awe.
You have approached even the smallest details with excellence;
Your works are wonderful;
I carry this knowledge deep within my soul.

As I took shape in secret,
carefully crafted in the heart of the earth before I was born from its womb.
You see all things;
You saw me growing, changing in my mother’s womb;
Every detail of my life was already written in Your book;
You established the length of my life before I ever tasted the sweetness of it.
Your thoughts and plans are treasures to me, O God! I cherish each and every one of them!
How grand in scope! How many in number!
If I could count each one of them, they would be more than all the grains of sand on earth. Their number is inconceivable!
Even when I wake up, I am still near to You” (Psalm 139:1-18, THE VOICE).
