It’s Resolution Time Again

By my count, we have 4 more days of 2017. That means it’s time for those new year’s resolutions again.

I have some advice, not original with me, about how to go about making those resolutions go from wishful thinking to reality.

  1. Write them down somewhere. Even if it’s on a roll of toilet paper, writing them down moves them from hypothetical to real goals.
  2. Make them tangible and visual. Don’t just say that you want to lose weight. Say that you want to run in a 5K or fit into size 32 jeans.
  3. Make them realistic. Don’t aim to run an Ironman Triathlon if you’ve never done any serious running in your entire life.
  4. Celebrate the victories, even the small ones.
  5. Remember that the ultimate goal isn’t hitting goals but improving your quality of life.
  6. Make at least one goal very attainable, like taking a nap every day. Ok, that one’s mine, but I think it’s a good one.

So there you go. I actually wrote something that has bullet points and everything. Unlike my Pinterest boards, you can actually use it to do something constructive.

Now go and do it.

 

Four Days Left in 2015

Note: if you still have unfulfilled resolutions that you haven’t given up on for 2015, now’s the time to get crackin’. You have four days left. That’s all.

Four days.

It seems like it wasn’t that long ago I was bidding a fond farewell to 2014 and wondering what 2015 would look like.

Speedy. 2015 has looked and felt and gone by speedily. Much more so than 2014.

So what are you planning to do in 2016 to improve your life? What are your resolutions and goals for the new year?

After hearing Aaron Bryant’s sermon, I think my goal is the same as the prophetess Anna from Luke 2– to do whatever it takes to get to where I see the Redeemer in my life and that He becomes the focus of my single-minded devotion.

Also, I’d like to see the Tennessee Titans not look like the Bad News Bears of the NFL. It’s gotten embarrassing to watch the games.

I’d like to see people who profess the name of Jesus in Nashville being more visible (and I put myself in that category). A friend of mine posted on Facebook that 95% of the churches in Nashville are declining.

So much for Nashville being the belt buckle of the Bible belt. We have a lot of church buildings, but not nearly as many vibrant, biblical churches that are actively engaging in a Acts 2-type lifestyle of missional living and intentional community.

As I’ve mentioned before, maybe it’s time for most of us (me included) to stop merely going to church and start being the church. The difference is one hour on Sunday and one hour on Wednesday versus 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

So there we are. That’s what I hope to see in 2016. Maybe those Titans might even start being competitive if they can get decent front office leadership and ownership that actually cares about winning.

But that’s another blog for another day.

 

Waving at Promises from Afar

“Each one of these people of faith died not yet having in hand what was promised, but still believing. How did they do it? They saw it way off in the distance, waved their greeting, and accepted the fact that they were transients in this world. People who live this way make it plain that they are looking for their true home. If they were homesick for the old country, they could have gone back any time they wanted. But they were after a far better country than that—heaven country. You can see why God is so proud of them, and has a City waiting for them” (Hebrews 11:13-16).

In my quest to read through the Bible in 2015, I’m currently in 2 Chronicles 32, and it reads like a tragedy. It seems almost from the start, the people of God fell short of expectations, rebelling against God and worshipping just about anything and everything but God. Even having the Kingdom split in two and the Northern Kingdom (Israel) taken captive and deported to Babylon didn’t help.

If the Bible ended there, it would be about the most depressing book I’ve ever read. But I’ve cheated and read the end of the story. I know how it ends. When you know that ultimately God and His people prevail, it makes the dark parts easier to stomach.

Sadly, I can relate too much to these people. They started off with brash promises and the best of intentions, but these promises and intentions lasted about as long as my New Year’s resolutions. Not long.

At this point, they’re coming to the end of a series of vicious cycles where 1) the people are living well, 2) the people forget God and try to be like all their neighbors, 3) God gets angry and punishes them by famine, war, and hostile takeovers, 3) the people repent, 4) God forgives them and restores them.

By this point, God has had enough. They’ve pushed Him too far. There’s no sign of the people wanting to change and God is totally just to write them off as a lost cause.

But even now there’s a plan. There’s always been a plan. There’s a Messiah in the works, promised all the way back in Genesis 3:16 to come and deliver His people. There have been prophecies and stories passed around for generations and the faintest glimmer of hope even in the bleakest moments.

That’s what Easter is all about– that long awaited and eagerly anticipated promise coming true at last.

 

My 2015 Resolutions As of January 1, 2015

Note: these are still a work in progress, so they are subject to change. Most likely, I will think of something I left out and add it at a later date, hopefully before 2016.

Here are my resolutions for the new year (already in progress):

1) Lose 30 pounds. I figure that’s roughly 2.5 pounds per month. That’s doable, I think.

2) Read through the Bible again this year.

3) Wear my 30 X 30 jeans again (this won’t happen unless I accomplish goal #1)

4) Be working in a full-time permanent job by the end of the year.

5) Be better at giving other people the benefit of the doubt and giving grace both to others and to myself.

6) Do something spontaneous every day of 2015.

7) Do 5 things I’ve never done before (I’ll have to figure out what those are first).

8) Continue to be awesome.

9) Get back into jogging/running/fast walking/treadmilling/some other form of regular exercise.

I think that covers it for now. If I think of anything else, I’ll add it and note that I added it so I will remember that I added it. Comprende?

 

Happy Happy 2014!

Well, it is officially 2014 and, thankfully, the media is calling it “twenty fourteen” instead of “two thousand and fourteen.” It just serms simpler.

I’ve made a list of things I want to do, some of which I have already implemented. It’s all about a healthier me for 2014. Hey, that almost rhymed.

1) I plan on getting back into running/trail hiking/bike riding at least 5 times a week.

2) I’m looking to cut back majorly processed sugars, breads, red meats, and fast foods.

3) i would love to see the term “bestie” (referring to best friend) eliminated from common usage. What was so wrong about BFF? And is it really so very hard to type “best friend”? I think not). There’s no theological or grammatical reason. It just annoys the crap out of me.

4) I would love to implement a “Greg’s Mac Fund” for me to buy a Mac Book at some point in the near future.

5) i plan on celebrating my 42nd birthday in style on February 28 (and not forgetting that ol’ Elvis was this age when he had his unfortunate bathroom episode).

6) i plan on working on my #1 New York Times bestseller novel that will allow me to quit my day job and spend more time on social media (I jest about everything but writing my novel).

7) i want to spend MORE time with the people who mean the most to me. That’s YOU. And currently, my calendar is looking rather open.

I’m not expecting 2014 to be a banner year. I am expecting God to show up and be just as faithful to me as He was in 2013 and 2012 and all those other years.

And you will be hearing a lot more about the progress on my new fitness regime. Probably starting tomorrow.

My New Year’s Resolutions Thus Far

I haven’t really given a lot of thought to new year’s resolutions. I probably should start on that sometime soon, but for now I’ll give you what I have so far. It’s a short list, but we’re only 3 days into 2013, so I figure that I have at least another week or two to really get all my goals down in writing. Here goes:

1) To not get hit by any more cars. I think once was enough for a lifetime and I’m fortunate to only have a dislocated pinky and a busted elbow from it. I think that’s a doable resolution, don’t you?

2) To look both ways twice before crossing the street. It goes along with the first one, and so far I’ve been faithful with this one.

3) To do better at giving people the benefit of the doubt and grace. I’ve needed plenty of grace from other people in the past, so I know what it feels like to need it. I also know that when someone does something I don’t like or understand, there’s always one fact about that person that if I knew, would completely change my perspective on why they did what they did.

4) This one’s still a work in progress. Check back later.

5) Ditto for #4. In fact, #6, #7, and #8, too.

That’s it for me for now.

I’d like to hear your resolutions. Partly because I really am interested. Partly because I could always take the ones I really like and steal them and say they were my ideas.

I hope and pray that if 2013 was a good year that 2013 will be even better. If 2012 was a rough year that you are glad to have gotten through, I hope 2013 will see good things and blessings coming your way. Even if you’ve gotten off to a bad start, January 4 can always be your new beginning. It’s never too late to start again.
