The Key to Life

“Be cheerful no matter what; pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18MSG).

That’s it.

Rejoice. Pray Always. Give Thanks.

That is God’s will for you.

Do these three things repeatedly until they each become a habit and you will be better off for it.

I didn’t say that you will come into untold riches and fame.

I didn’t say that everything in your life will automatically go smoothly from here on out.

I did say that you will find joy and fulfillment in living out of the center of God’s will for you.

Rejoice. Pray Always. Give thanks.

24/7 Gratitude

“To be grateful for the good things that happen in our lives is easy, but to be grateful for all of our lives-the good as well as the bad, the moments of joy as well as the moments of sorrow, the successes as well as the failures, the rewards as well as the rejections-that requires hard spiritual work. Still, we are only truly grateful people when we can say thank you to all that has brought us to the present moment. As long as we keep dividing our lives between events and people we would like to remember and those we would rather forget, we cannot claim the fullness of our beings as a gift of God to be grateful for.

Let’s not be afraid to look at everything that has brought us to where we are now and trust that we will soon see in it the guiding hand of a loving God” (Henri Nouwen).

I’d only add one thing. This kind of gratitude only happens when we learn to find God in everything. It happens when we seek and see God’s hand in the good and the bad, the easy and the hard, the pleasant and the painful.

I don’t believe that God causes the bad, the hard, and the painful, but I do believe that God is at work through those times and can turn even the worst of them into something way better than we could ever have dreamed of with our small finite minds.

Being grateful in everything even includes those awkward, in-between times when it’s not quite terrible but it’s not close to being awesome either. It’s hardest of all to give thanks in the hallway between God closing one door and God opening another, but that’s where you find so many little things to be thankful for that add up to a heart brimming over with gratitude.

“Celebrate always, pray constantly, and give thanks to God no matter what circumstances you find yourself in. (This is God’s will for all of you in Jesus the Anointed)” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, The Voice)

Give Thanks No Matter What

“Be cheerful no matter what; pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live” (Ephesians 5:16-18).

That’s the mantra for the day: give thanks no matter what.

Good day? Give thanks.

Bad day? Give thanks

Ugly day? Give thanks.

I know I probably sound like a broken record at this point, but I’m learning how to give thanks in any and every situation.

Gratitude is more than just an attitude. It’s a way of living that leads to a new way of seeing. Giving thanks changes how you see who you are and what you have. Suddenly, what you have becomes enough (again, props to Ann Voskamp for that thought).

It’s much easier to give a hearty “Amen” to something like this when you’re in a comfortable pew on Sunday with a fat wallet and a pretty wife and two perfect kids.

It’s not so easy when you’re in the midst of an anxiety attack and feeling like it will never get better. When your wallet is pitifully thin and there’s no ring on your finger and you feel like you’re beating your head against the proverbial wall.

Still, the command is clear: give thanks. This is God’s will for you. Give thanks.

The command is not to give thanks FOR the tragedies and heartaches in your life, but to give thanks IN THE MIDST of these events. Give thanks that God is still able to work out even these things for good. Just ask Joseph.

That’s my message for this Saturday night: give thanks.

See you again tomorrow.
