Showing Up

Tonight, Mike Glenn challenged the Kairos crowd for the upcoming week to find a place and a time and to spend just five minutes a day in prayer.

Not even prayer with words. He said to just show up and be there for five minutes.

So many times, my prayer life can feel like reciting a script. Sure, some of it involves adoration and thanksgiving, but it still feels too much like a monologue. Which may work for Shakespearean actors and comedians, but makes for a poor prayer life.

Sometimes, I probably need to sit still and not say anything. I need to not ask for anything, but wait expectantly for God to show up and speak into my life.

No one has prayer mastered. The point is not to pray perfectly, but pray persistently. The Epistle of Romans reminds us that the Holy Spirit translates groans and sighs into prayers that God then translates into transformation in me and in my world.

So when all I’ve got are caveman prayers, that’s enough for God. When all I have are tears, God hears even those. When I feel unworthy to approach the throne of grace, God says start from where you are. Pray in the middle of your mess.

I love the definition of a friend as one who knows the song in your heart and can sing it back to you when you forget the words.

There is a Friend who sticks closer than a brother who not only knows the song in your heart, but composed it and put it there.

If you can create space and quiet in your life, you will hear Him singing your song to you every morning and every night, reminding you of who you are and Whose you are.

Think about that as you fall asleep tonight.
